Autism Spectrum Disorder and Treatment

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are among the most complex conditions because they will gravely affect all aspects of the individual’s life. At the core those with this disorder will find it challenging if not impossible to interact and communicate with others in an appropriate way.

Much of the presenting symptoms will also cause behavioral issues as well as some learning disabilities and currently there is no cure for this disorder. Instead the medical community must focus on treatments of the individual symptoms of ASD which can be challenging as there are various levels of severity and a wide range of symptoms that will vary depending on the individual.

Diagnosis of Autism

Also referred to as pervasive developmental disorder the usual symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Prominent difficulties and challenges in social interactions
  • Delays or difficulties in language and communication skills
  • Repetitive behaviors that impede on normal functioning
  • Obsessive or compulsive behaviors
  • Inability to be flexible with one’s schedule to routine
  • Not responding appropriately to social, environmental or intimate situations

Those diagnosed will fall into one of three separate categories and general diagnosis which are Autism, Asperger’s or Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Most of the symptoms will remain similar but the degrees to which those diagnosed will suffer will be the marked difference.

All three of the diagnosed ASD’s occur more in boys than girls and there is little known about the causation although it is thought that genetics or changes in one’s DNA are contributing factors. While some parents or guardians will notice symptoms very early on, usually ASDs are diagnosed between the ages of two and three when behavioral and motor or communication skills are truly developing.

Diagnosing any one of the spectrum disorders is done purely on a behavioral and observational diagnosis with the child’s daily routines, actions, responses and behaviors being analyzed and scrutinized. It has been found that early treatment and diagnosis can greatly improve the prognosis for those diagnosed and that with proper treatment and therapies, individual’s quality of life can be improved.
